Shirley Lorraine Newton “Tex”, 95, of Harbor Beach passed away peacefully at Lakeview Extended Care and Rehab Center of the Harbor Beach Community Hospital on Sunday, March 15, 2026. Shirley was born April 27, 1930 to Clarence and Naomi Hurren. She and her ten siblings helped on the family farm as they grew up. When Shirley was old enough to get a job, she moved to Port Huron, Michigan where she worked briefly in a factory and also Huron Laundry. While in Port Huron, she met and married Dean Mosher and together they raised six children; Naomi Jean, Marvin, Robin, Rita, Ronnie and Gigi. Later, she met Edsel Sovereen and had one child, Mary Ann. Shirley found her way to Powers restaurant in Port Huron and worked as a car hop waitress for over sixty years. This is where Shirley earned her nickname “Tex”, because she always wore a cowboy hat while she served her customers. Shirley’s customers enjoyed having her serve them and loved her quick wit and spunky personality. She also worked briefly in a lunch wagon for Powers serving fries while overlooking the St. Clair River in Port Huron. Shirley retired in her eighties and moved to Alabama to enjoy her retired life with her family in the south. She later moved back to Harbor Beach where she resided the rest of her life. Shirley loved her family very much. She especially loved cooking and having her family over for big dinners. Shirley loved every holiday and loved to decorate her house for each one. She was the happiest when spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and loved spoiling them whenever she got the chance. Shirley enjoyed watching Western shows, quilting, playing Bingo and Yahtzee, rodeos, horses and her dogs. She also loved traveling with her family and friends whenever she got the chance. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, she will be remembered for her generosity towards others, humor, big heart, strength, love for life and being a hard worker. Anyone that met her could see that she was one of a kind. Her love with stay with us, in the traditions she has passed down and the big hearts she helped to create and shape. Left to cherish Shirley’s memory are her children; Naomi Jean (Kevin) Engel, Marvin (Crystal) Mosher, Robin (Mike) Roberts, Rita Swartz, Ronnie Mosher, Gigi Siemen as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Shirley was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Ann Westrick, daughter-in-law, Karen Mosher, son-in-law, James Swartz, parents Clarence and Naomi Hurren, siblings Cecelia Guitar, William Hurren, Kenneth Hurren, Russell Hurren, Isabelle Breathour, Reginald Hurren, Dorthea Detgen, Richard Hurren, Anna Mae Catanzaro, Ronald Hurren, and her husbands, Dean Mosher, Edsel Sovereen, and William Newton. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held later this summer. The family would like to thank Lakeview Extended Care and Rehab Center of the Harbor Beach Hospital for their wonderful care during her stay.
