Cheryl M. LaPine

Cheryl Marie (Awrey) LaPine of Harbor Beach, MI passed away on August 14, 2023 at McLaren hospital in Port Huron, MI after a strong fight against cancer. She was born in Iron Mountain, MI on May 6, 1952. Cheryl married the love of her life, Pat LaPine, on August 6, 1977: they spent 46 wonderful years together raising a family and supporting each other through all of life’s ups and downs. Cheryl was a loving wife, mother, grandma, sister, aunt, friend, and teacher. She was a selfless woman who prioritized God and family. Cheryl supported her kids in all of their athletic, academic, and adult endeavors – from reading bedtime stories to cheering them on through the unpredictable weather for 17 track seasons. She continued to be their biggest fan as they made their way through life. Cheryl instilled the love of reading, puzzles, and games in her kids and grandkids. She loved teaching and could be found in her classroom the week after school ended, preparing and excited for the next school year. She especially looked forward to reading “The Witches” to her 5th graders and dressing up as The Grand High Witch for Halloween. Unlike this character, Cheryl is remembered for her immeasurable love and kindness to her family, friends, and students. She is survived by her husband Pat LaPine, her favorite children Kristy (Kevin) Sheehan, Sean (Stacey) LaPine, and Megan LaPine, grandkids Brinlee LaPine, Jack Sheehan, and Ellery LaPine, and siblings Randy (Connie) Awrey, Kim Awrey, and Terry (Lisa) Awrey. She also loved and was loved by many in-laws, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sharon and Delos Awrey, and son, Michael LaPine. Cheryl was a graduate of Northern Michigan University. After graduation, she taught first grade at Ramsey Robertson Elementary School. She took a break to spend time at home with her kids and then continued her teaching career at Our Lady of Lake Huron, where she inspired students for decades. Cheryl also enjoyed leading her daughter’s girl scout troop, helping to create story hour at the library, heading the children’s liturgy at church, and twisting the night away with Pat at dance club. Funeral Mass for Cheryl will be Saturday, August 19, 2023 at 11 am at Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church, of the Holy Name of Mary Parish, with Fr. Kevin Wojciechowski officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation for Cheryl will be Friday, from 2-8 pm at the Ramsey Funeral Home of Harbor Beach. Visitation on Saturday, will be at the church, from 10 am until time of services at 11 am. A Knights of Columbus Rosary will take place Friday at 6 pm at the funeral home, and a Parish Vigil Service will take place on Friday at 7 pm.
