Delbert Callender

Delbert Callender, 87, of Harbor Beach went to be with his Lord on Thursday, January 15, 2009, at Harbor Beach Community Hospital, with his family at his side. He was born on May 23, 1921, to the late Gladys Gotts in Bad Axe. He graduated from Port Hope High School. He married his sweetheart, Eleanor Arlene Silverthorn, on February 14, 1942. They had Five children and were married nearly 67 years. Delbert served with the 40th Engineers during World War II in northern Africa and Europe. He worked for Hercules Powder Company in Harbor Beach until his retirement in 1983. He served several years as a cubmaster and scoutmaster and was Commander of the Harbor Beach VFW. Delbert was a member of the Harbor Beach United Methodist Church. He was known for his wood-carving and enjoyed traveling and camping with his wife and family. Delbert is survived by his wife Eleanor Callender of Harbor Beach, Daughter Penny (Robert) Letts of Harbor Beach, sons; Thomas (Margaret) Callender of Ruth, David (Nancy) Callender of Surry, NH, and Richard (Mary) Callender of Harbor Beach. Grandchildren; Jillynn (Joe) Keppler, Sara Callender (Jay Grossman), Jeremy (Nicole) Arntz, Laura (Paul) Fisher, James (Christy Callender, Timothy (Bridget) Callender, Daniel (Becky) Callender,Kirk (Sarah) Callender, Travis Callender, Kyle Callender and Fiance Kim Golis, NIckolas Callender, and Gabriel Callender. Three step-grandchildren; Laura Letts, Michael ( Tina) Letts, Michelle (John) Whistler. 16 great-grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Also survived by his sister Doris Callender of Aurora, CO, brother Ernest (Norma) Callender of West Bloomfield, Sister-in-law, Edythe Silverthorn, Lexington, KY, and Brother -in-law William (Angie) Silverthorn of Zephyrhills, FL, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a year-old son, John Wesley Callender; a brother Robert Callender, and a sister-in-law Betty Ogden. Funeral Services for Delbert will be Sunday, January 18, 2009 at 2 pm in the Ramsey Funeral Home of Harbor Beach, with Rev. Paula Timm officiating. Cremation will follow at Sunset Valley Crematory, Bay City. Visitation for Delbert will be Saturday from 2-5, 7-9pm in the funeral home and again on Sunday beginning at 1 pm until time of services at 2 pm in the funeral home.
