MIldred Newell

Mildred Newell, a longtime resident of Nashville, Tennessee went to rest with the Lord on Tuesday, November 22, 2016. Mildred was born on November 30, 1926 in Harbor Beach, Michigan. She is preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Catherine Schulte; her husband, Leslie Newell; her son, Patrick; her daughters, Frances and Leslie; her sister, Catherine; her brothers, Joe, George, Melvin, and Anthony. Mildred married Leslie Newell in 1955 and their union was blessed with seven wonderful children. The family lived for many years in Ferndale, Michigan, but later relocated to Port Hope, Michigan. The rural, farm setting was the perfect place to raise their large family, even though the children still remember the challenge of trudging down a snow packed driveway to catch their school bus. The time in Port Hope was a happy one, Mildred and her family lived right down the street from her sister, Mary. Many memories were made during family bonfires and sleepovers. Mildred loved her family, but especially her boys. She was a very supportive mother and an active participant in her children’s activities. She was so supportive that she followed all her children’s sporting events, even when they led her right into a snow storm. Unable to reach her destination she sought shelter and refuge with the good sisters at a convent, but it took a natural disaster to keep her away from supporting her children. Mildred was a loving mother, nourishing her family with both kindness and faith. She wasn’t strict, but more relaxed, but not so relaxed that she wouldn’t be upset about one of her children coming home a bit too late. One son had to muzzle the barking dog, Pooh Bear, in order to slip in and avoid his mother’s disapproval. Mildred was an involved and active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Ladies Society, and hands of Christ. Every bake sale she brought her famous brownies. Everyone loved them and complimented them, until she admitted that her daughter had been making them all along. That didn’t come as too big of a shock because everyone knew the Schulte girls were all great cooks and bakers. Mildred herself worked many years at McDonalds as their primary biscuit crafter. Mildred loved puzzles, especially farm house scenes. She enjoyed playing cards, but was a pinochle aficionado. She was always the first one at the table and had no qualms about telling you to “hurry up” when she was ready to play no matter where or what you were doing; including using the restroom. Mildred enjoyed gardening. Her family fondly remembers her taking a salt shaker to the garden and eating tomatoes straight off the vine. Mildred’s life was prolific, and she left behind a legacy with her children, Millie (Larry) Cusson, Anthony (Lisa) Newell, Kent (Renate) Newell, and Gloria McCoy; 16 grandchildren, 23 greatgrandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. Mildred shared a deep and special bond with her family, but also with her longtime friend, Shirley Newton. Mildred loved good food, good fun, and family time; all with a smile that could light up the room. She will be remembered as a bright, shining light with a generous spirit and pleasant personality. Mildred’s beautiful life will be forever cherished, and her loss will resonate through a host of family and friends. Visitation with the family will be Friday November 25, 2016 from 4- 8pm at Spring Hill Funeral Home. Rosary service will take place on Friday at 7pm at Spring Hill Funeral home. A celebration of life service will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Madison, TN. Celebration will take place on Saturday November 26, 2016 at 10:30am with visitation 1 hour prior at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Burial will be at 1pm on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at OLLH Church Cemetery in Harbor Beach, Michigan. Local Arrangements are being handled by the Ramsey Funeral Home of Harbor Beach.
